Congo in the spotlight for its talented youth

07.06.2025
On June 6, Minister of Sports Mr. Huge Nguellondelé met with young Congolese who have distinguished themselves abroad. Among them was our Jarny Vernel Kimpedi.

It is worth remembering the name of this young Congolese. Jarny is the first person from Congo to master the unique sport of "mas-wrestling" which originated in the largest region of Russia — the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). For those unfamiliar, "mas" in Yakut means "tree, stick," and the second part suggests that it is a form of wrestling.

Jarny Kimpedi is a first-year master's student at the Faculty of Journalism at Ufa State University of Science and Technology. Besides mastering the Russian language and successfully studying at a Russian university, he has repeatedly represented the Republic of Congo in mas-wrestling on the platform at prestigious international tournaments. He is the bronze medalist of the IV Mas-wrestling World Championship in the weight category up to 60 kg. After his impressive performance, he gladly gave interviews to numerous media outlets and proudly shared that he hails from an African country. Subsequently, he achieved several victories at various competitions in different cities across Russia. In Saint Petersburg, he took 3rd place at the Russian Open Championship among students in the 65 kg category.

The Minister urged young compatriots to follow the example of outstanding compatriots who honorably represent their country abroad.

We hope that Jarny Vernel will soon give us another reason to be proud of him, as he has registered to participate in the VII Mas-wrestling World Championship, which will soon be held in Mongolia.
